Research interests
The locus of my research is situated at the intersection of disaster risk management, urban studies and international development, with a regional focus in cities and urban areas in Latin America and the Caribbean. I have conducted fieldwork in various Latin American medium-sized and capital cities, spanning Santa Fe and Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Arequipa and Lima (Peru), but also in the metropolitan areas of Barcelona and London. I am particularly interested in experimenting with participatory and action research approaches in low-income settlements and municipal governments that have the potential to catalyse and steer policy-academia interfaces at the city scale.
My doctoral research coalesced around an exploration of institutionalisation processes of disaster risk management and transformative urban change steered by municipal governments in medium-sized cities in low- and middle-income countries. It unveiled the intricacies of municipal administrations as complex and dynamic organisations and the trajectories of change that cross-cutting policy paradigms such as disaster risk management (DRM) stimulate within these organisations and across their relations with others in networked spaces.
