In particular, I am interested in the giant impact phase of planetary accretion, which I model using smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. I am currently trying to understand the effects of giant impacts on the formation and evolution of planetary atmospheres and oceans, and how giant impacts onto the Earth could explain the Earth's volatile geochemistry. Ultimately, I am interested in processes which build and maintain habitable environments.</p>\n<p>Previous work from my MSci has involved lab-based experimental biogeochemistry, trying to understand the viability of iron-based metabolic pathways under conditions expected in the ocean of Saturn's moon, Enceladus.</p>","relatedPeople":[{"id":"ad2b6a4d-19e3-46ae-a926-fc3ed82b29e5","weight":2,"firstName":"Zoe","lastName":"Leinhardt","title":"Professor","profilePicture":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/files/289331302/148951.jpg","profileUrl":"/person/Zoe-Leinhardt-ad2b6a4d-19e3-46ae-a926-fc3ed82b29e5/","role":"Professor of Physics","orgUnit":{"id":"36b467b9-f473-47a9-8911-82a8b9d5235c","name":"School of Physics","type":"School","url":"http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/"}},{"id":"3945d08c-695f-4de6-925f-3610845e8b5f","weight":1,"firstName":"David","lastName":"Naafs","title":"Dr","profilePicture":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/files/289334854/Bernhard_Naafs_2397_3_.jpg","profileUrl":"/person/David-Naafs-3945d08c-695f-4de6-925f-3610845e8b5f/","role":"Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry","orgUnit":{"id":"de949949-2cb2-430b-883c-30103d8f86eb","name":"School of Chemistry","type":"School","url":"http://www.bristol.ac.uk/chemistry/"}},{"id":"9ffa920d-1400-4377-9548-47248fa12116","weight":2,"firstName":"Philip","lastName":"Carter","title":"Dr","profilePicture":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/files/474453723/June24headshotsqlow.png","profileUrl":"/person/Philip-Carter-9ffa920d-1400-4377-9548-47248fa12116/","role":"Senior Research Associate","orgUnit":{"id":"36b467b9-f473-47a9-8911-82a8b9d5235c","name":"School of Physics","type":"School","url":"http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/"}},{"id":"68bec5c1-9f51-4e8a-b4c6-c31dc8b41b65","weight":1,"firstName":"James","lastName":"Byrne","title":"Dr","profilePicture":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/files/288948686/Jbyrne.jpg","profileUrl":"/person/James-Byrne-68bec5c1-9f51-4e8a-b4c6-c31dc8b41b65/","role":"Associate Professor","orgUnit":{"id":"175e79fa-4107-4b25-8c5f-d18c216dfb98","name":"School of Earth Sciences","type":"School","url":"http://www.bristol.ac.uk/earthsciences/"}},{"id":"9fc527c3-d0d2-4e5e-aa4f-d6a810f5258b","weight":2,"firstName":"Simon","lastName":"Lock","title":"Dr","profilePicture":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/files/304501735/052318_EPS_0041_website_ds_1_.jpg","profileUrl":"/person/Simon-Lock-9fc527c3-d0d2-4e5e-aa4f-d6a810f5258b/","role":"NERC Research Fellow","orgUnit":{"id":"175e79fa-4107-4b25-8c5f-d18c216dfb98","name":"School of Earth Sciences","type":"School","url":"http://www.bristol.ac.uk/earthsciences/"}}],"positions":{"external":[],"internal":[]},"publications":{"total":"5","linkToPublications":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/matt-j-roche/publications/","all":[{"id":"5297e756-3f57-4b27-b1d1-48bfdccb4874","title":"Atmospheric loss during giant impacts","url":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/publications/5297e756-3f57-4b27-b1d1-48bfdccb4874","type":"Conference abstract","status":"Published","source":null,"authors":[{"firstName":"Matthew","lastName":"Roche","profileUrl":"/person/Matt-Roche-0c37ef90-7aef-41db-8ae6-4e709a1b4eea/"},{"firstName":"et","lastName":"al.","profileUrl":null}],"date":"2025-09-12T00:00"},{"id":"807488f2-0fa6-485f-b8b9-d419c4a342a5","title":"Atmospheric Loss during Giant Impacts: Mechanisms and Scaling of Near- and Far-field Loss","url":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/publications/807488f2-0fa6-485f-b8b9-d419c4a342a5","type":"Article","status":"Published","source":"Planetary Science Journal","authors":[{"firstName":"Matthew","lastName":"Roche","profileUrl":"/person/Matt-Roche-0c37ef90-7aef-41db-8ae6-4e709a1b4eea/"},{"firstName":"et","lastName":"al.","profileUrl":null}],"date":"2025-06-30T00:00"},{"id":"0a6033bb-6927-4041-a2d9-db6824350d7c","title":"Isotope Discrimination During Photosynthesis Remained Constant Across the Phanerozoic","url":"https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/publications/0a6033bb-6927-4041-a2d9-db6824350d7c","type":"Conference abstract","status":"Published","source":null,"authors":[{"firstName":"C.
