Degree Congregation, 6 July 1948

This photograph shows University of Bristol graduands waiting to receive their degrees from the Chancellor Winston Churchill. They are sitting in the partially restored Great Hall of the Wills Memorial Building, which was badly damaged during World War Two, and was fully restored in the 1960s. The spaces in the front row are presumably for Honorary Graduands, or for members of University Staff involved in the ceremonies. In 1948, Allen Lane, founder of Penguin Books, was given an Honorary MA Degree. Degree ceremonies are being held at the University of Bristol from 10-17 July 2009. DM254/62
