The hare

The hare

This affectionate portrait of the hare was cut on boxwood by England’s greatest wood engraver, Thomas Bewick, for ‘A general history of quadrupeds’ (1790), a work which set new standards for affordable natural history illustration and was frequently reprinted. Penelope M. Jenkin, lecturer in Zoology in the University of Bristol, presented the book to the Library in 1941.
