The blue-throat redstart

The blue-throat redstart

The blue-throat redstart from ĎA natural history of uncommon birdsí published in 1751 by George Edwards, Library-Keeper to the Royal College of Physicians, and printed for the author at the College. This work won for its author the Copley Medal of the Royal Society. Edwards acquired the craft of etching from another noted naturalist, Mark Catesby (who also acquired from Gibraltar the specimen for this image), and by executing the etchings himself was able to make such a beautifully-illustrated work an economic possibility. The University Library copy is part of the magnificent ornithological collection bequeathed by Dr. Joseph Wiglesworth.
