Printing from Linux


These instructions assume you are printing from an Ubuntu based laptop.

Connect to Eduroam

  • Ensure you are connected to Eduroam. Details on how to do so can be found on the Ubuntu Eduroam setup page.
  • Connect to the Print Release queue

  • Open System Settings. You can access this via the "Toolkit" icon in the Launcher, or via the "Cog" icon in the top right of the screen.
  • Click on the "Printers" icon and then select "Add".

  • Configure the Select Device window as follows:
    • Select LPD/LPR Host or Printer from the Devices column.
    • In the Host field, enter: yourUoBusername@is-print3.pcr.bris.ac.uk.
    • In the Queue field, enter: Print_Release_B&W to add the Black & White queue.
    • In the Queue field, enter: Print_Release_Colour to add the Colour queue.
    • Click Forward.
  • Your configured window should look like this:

  • Ubuntu new printer
  • At the Choose Driver window, select Generic and click Forward:

  • Ubuntu choose driver 1
  • Select the PostScript driver as follows:
    • In the Models panel, select PostScript.
    • In the Drivers panel, select Generic PostScript Printer Foomatic/PostScript[en](recommended).
    • Click Forward.
  • The configured window should look like this:

  • Ubuntu choose driver 2
  • Enter a suitable description for the printer. For example, if you are adding the B&W queue:
    • Printer Name: Print_Release_B&W
    • Description: Print_Release_B&W
    • Location: Print_Release_B&W
    • Click Apply
  • The configured window should look like this:

  • Click "Print Test Page" to test your connection
