What is the MyFiles service?

  • MyFiles provides a limited quantity of resilient storage for individual's work-related data. It is closely integrated with the Managed Windows and Remote Desktop services.
  • If you need to share or archive data, or have exceptional filestore requirements other storage options are available.
  • Data that would adversely affect the service (such as virtual machine disk files) should not be saved.
  • It is not suitable for intensive analysis of data.

Who can use MyFiles?

All members of the University, including Visitors are allocated filestore as part of the account creation process.

Where can I use MyFiles?

MyFiles is available on the University's managed Windows and remote desktop services. The desktop and documents folders are redirected to MyFiles, in addition MyFiles is mapped automatically as the O: drive.

On systems where MyFiles is not automatically available you can locate your folder in the path shown on the Service Desk's Personal Details page. Apple OSX users in the University should use the equivalent SMB path - for the Windows path: \\ads.bris.ac.uk\filestore\myfiles\ab12345 you should use smb://ads.bris.ac.uk/filestore/myfiles/ab12345

How much MyFiles space do I have?

From April 2016 MyFiles space allocation quotas have been applied so all staff and students can use up 5GB of storage over and above their current use. In exceptional cases it may be possible to provide more.

Can you increase the MyFiles space?

We can increase your available space up to the maximum allocation for your role. You can check the available space using in Explorer in Windows (press the windows key on your keyboard and type explorer then press the enter key).

Can I share MyFiles?

No, shared filestore may be provided by your department on one of the Departmental Filestores.

What happens to MyFiles when I leave the University?

Any data stored will be deleted at the same time as a your computer accounts and email address. You will be notified by email in advance of this. You are expected to make copies of any files you wish to keep before you leave the University.

Can I recover lost or older versions of files?

Under normal circumstances up to 7 days of MyFiles history is available for self-service recovery using Previous Versions.

How do I access MyFiles using the University's Wireless service or from home using the VPN?

You can access MyFiles while connected to the eduroam wireless service. First copy your MyFiles path shown on the IT Service Desk's Personal Details page. In Windows you can map a network drive to your MyFiles path, entering your username in the format UOB\yourusername and your usual password.
