Encrypt a USB Flash Drive using Bitlocker To Go

Please note you must use an Enterprise version of Windows (i.e. any managed PC at the University) to encrypt a USB drive with BitLockerToGo. Once encrypted, the USB drive can be used with any version of Windows.

To encrypt a USB Flash Drive:

  • Insert the drive into an appropriate port
  • In Windows Explorer right click on the drive and choose "Turn on Bitlocker..."
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard.
  • When prompted you should store the recovery key somewhere where it will be backed up and only you have access (e.g. your user filestore)

To decrypt files on a USB Flash Drive

  • On Windows 7 systems you will be prompted to enter the encryption password when you insert the drive.
  • On Windows 7 systems where autorun is disabled (this includes most machines in the University) you'll need to run BitlockerToGo.exe to get access to the contents.
