Using Windows 10

Finding and opening your saved files

Start by clicking the file explorer icon on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.


Where you go next depends on where you saved your files.


OneDrive

We recommend that you store your files in OneDrive. New to OneDrive? Try the Using OneDrive web pages.

Many applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint) can open files that you've saved in OneDrive.

  • Click the Windows button in the bottom left of the screen.
  • Start typing the name of your application:
  • Select it from the list.
  • Open your file from OneDrive within the application.

MyFiles ('o' drive)

  • Click This PC in the left hand panel.

Your MyFiles should appear over on the right.

Departmental filestore (shared/network folders, 'H', 'X', 'Z' etc. drives)

You may have files stored somewhere in your department/school file store, e.g.:

You can still get to these files but you'll have to click through a few folders.

  • Click This PC in the left hand panel of File Explorer.
  • There are two routes to your file:

  • The best route to use is UoB network folders.
  • Start clicking through UoB network folders until you locate the folder in which your files are stored:

  • Or, if your folder lived in Filestore on ads in Windows 7, you can find it in Legacy filestore on ads.
  • Finally, if you know the address of your folder, press Windows key + R to open the Run box, and paste it in.

Documents/My Documents

The Documents folder (under Libraries) points to a Documents folder in your OneDrive.

This includes the Music, Pictures and Videos folders.

If you download or save things in Documents, it'll be saved in your OneDrive.

Web browsers available

Microsoft Edge is the recommended browser for Windows 10.

If something doesn't work in Edge, there's also Internet Explorer and Chrome available.

Click the Windows button in the bottom left and start typing the name.

Opening programs/applications

  • Click the Start icon in the bottom left of the screen:

  • Start typing the name of your application:
  • Select it from the list.

Logging out of the computer

  1. Click the Windows button in the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Click your profile icon in the left panel.
  3. Click Sign Out.
