Using Windows 10 after your computer is upgraded

Getting back to work after upgrading to Windows 10

There are a few things you'll need to do after the Windows 10 upgrade has run.

Finding your files

Start by opening Windows (File) Explorer (keyboard shortcut: press the Windows button + E):

Opening programs/applications

After upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft Office is available to use straight away. You can also install other software that you may need.

  1. Click the Start/Search icon in the bottom left of the screen:
  2. Start typing the name of your application:

  3. Select it from the list.
  4. If you can't find a particular software application, you may be able to install it from the Software Center.

Installing software on your Windows 10 UoB computer

  • After moving to Windows 10, Microsoft Office will be available to use straight away.
  • Apart from some specialist or licensed software, you can install most programs from our Software Center.

    Many people have found it useful to install Google Chrome, Adobe Reader and 7Zip straight away:

    For UoB applications (e.g. SITS), look for UoB Published Applications in the Software Center.

To install software from the Software Center

  1. Click the Start/Search button in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. Start typing software center and click the Software Center desktop app from the list.
  3. Find the software you need from the applications list and click on it (when you first log in, it may take a short while for the list of software to appear).
  4. Click Install.
  5. The full list of available software shows all items available in software including those that are restricted by license or must be requested via the Service Desk.

Web browsers available

Microsoft Edge is the default browser for Windows 10.

If something doesn't work in Edge, Internet Explorer is available from the (Windows) Start Menu.

Also, Chrome is available to install from the Software Center.

Switching to non-UK language packs & keyboard layouts

You can choose your preferred language pack & keyboard layouts in Windows 10.

  1. From the Start Menu (the Windows icon in the bottom left) go to Settings (cog) > Time & Language > Region & Language.
  2. Click on the language pack that you want to associate your new keyboard with and click Options.

    (If the language pack you want to link the keyboard to isn't there, click Add to add it at this point)

  3. Click Add a New Keyboard and make your choice from the list.
