Measuring seismic anisotropy in the crust

Born in the United States, Martha Kane Savage now also holds New Zealand citizenship, and is Professor of Geophysics at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW). She completed a BA in Physics at Swarthmore College in 1979 and an MSc and PhD in Geophysics at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and worked as a Research Professor at University of Nevada-Reno before moving to VUW in 1995. She became a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2011. Her research interests include seismology and its relation to tectonics and to earthquake and volcanic hazards. Specific research contributions include using variations in seismic wave speed with direction to determine the deformation of the Earth’s mantle and crust, and to study magma movement at volcanoes, and determining rates of foreshocks using the statistics of earthquake occurrence.
Professor Savage is in Bristol between August and October, and is being hosted by Dr James Wookey in the School of Earth Sciences (j.wookey@bristol.ac.uk). During her visit she will deliver the following events (all details tbc):
