As part of the application process we will require you to submit an "Innovations Pitch" in order for us to assess whether you are a suitable candidate - if you are innovative enough to study for this degree? It is also an opportunity for us to find out more about you and why want to join these unique innovation courses.
Why do you feel you should be given a place to study your chosen subject specialism with Innovation - what makes you innovative?
We want you to respond to this question by highlighting any skills, experience and/or passion you might have for innovation, creativity, design and/or entrepreneurship. You might want to show us what you have created already, or describe why you want to apply your chosen subject specialism to innovation to make a difference and help to change the world.
Candidates can respond to this challenge in either two ways.
- Candidates can either write a specific innovation pitch - you can write up to 1,000 words that shows you’d make a great innovation student – so it might take a few redrafts until you’re happy with it. You can either submit it as an attached word or pdf document within the online postgraduate application system. You may want to include images if you wish but we request that the personal statement does not exceed 6 pages.
- OR Candidates can video themselves pitching why they have the skills, experience and/or passion to be a great innovation student. Innovation pitch videos should not be longer than 3 minutes. Candidates should then place the video on an online accessible platform for us to view such as YouTube, Vimeo etc. and notify us of the URL where we can watch it within the online postgraduate application system. Be sure though that no copyrighted contents are in your video. Remember you can always make your video unlisted if you don’t want to make it publically accessible. If you have made your video unlisted then only those that have been given that direct URL to your video will be able to watch it. We will only share your video URL with the academic team in order to make their assessment, we won't share it with anyone else without your permission. Due to the university’s system we are unable to accept invites to our email addresses to view youtube videos which have been set to private. Please note that we are interested in assessing your ideas and response to this challenge, not your technical abilities. For example we aren't expecting HD videos recorded with specialist video cameras to be submitted - simply videoing yourself on your mobile phone, tablet or webcam will suffice as long as we can hear and see you clearly.
Entry Qualification Requirements
Entry qualification requirements will be a UK first-class or 2:1 honours degree in a subject from one of the broad groupings listed below, or an equivalent overseas qualification. The subject groupings reflect areas essential to the success of innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital age, and mirror those in which disciplinary expertise is offered our four-year integrated masters Innovation courses.
- Technology, Engineering, Science and Materials: From nanotechnology to critical infrastructure, biomedical engineering to the environment, energy to information technology, today’s opportunities and challenges have both technical and engineering dimensions, and innovation in all areas will also require suitable digital platforms. Specialist insights in relevant areas of computer science, engineering and the natural sciences will be essential.
- Creative and Performing Arts: Disciplines such as music, film, theatre, art history and practice, combine vibrant collaborative and performance practices with individual creativity, and provide essential content for emergent creative technologies, and new technical solutions to artistic and broader societal needs. Students who bring skills in these subject areas to innovation and entrepreneurship will be key players in the future success of the creative industries, and builders of a country’s economic, social and cultural capital.
- Human Experience (Individual, Behavioural, Environmental): Many degree subjects, particularly in Humanities and Social Sciences, provide an acute understanding of what it means to be human and how we as humans interact with and within our world. To create innovative solutions to real world problems we first need to understand the target users: the cultural contexts and behavioural patterns through which they function, and the environments to which they must relate. The need for nuanced appreciation of the requirements and feelings of target users is all the more emphatic in that we shall be educating ‘digital natives’ to design innovative products and services that will truly make a difference to those who are not.
Innovation can occur separately in any one of these subject areas, but when these disciplines collide particularly within the transdisciplinary innovation projects of our curriculum, truly innovative solutions to real world problems will be engendered.
