This report analysed the factors which seem to influence housing choice. It brings together the key findings of almost 100 published reports and sources of data on housing tenure, household budgets, and housing costs and housing preference.
- the characteristics of households in different forms of tenure, looking particularly at those who have recently made a choice of tenure: new social tenants; first time buyers including those who bought through Right to Buy or shared ownership schemes; and people who have sold their home and moved into the rented sector;
- the relationship between household incomes, housing expenditure and tenure choices, concluding with an analysis of the factors influencing rent and mortgage arrears;
- the characteristics and circumstances of households which seem to influence tenure preference, looking at the reasons that people give for both their housing preference and their actual housing choice;
- an overview of regional variations.
