Dr Edson Burton (Writer and Historian)

Title: ‘The Allure of Afrofuturism’

Since completing a PhD in 2004 at the University of the West of England Dr Edson Burton has combined academic pursuits with a career in creative writing. Over the past two years he has been developing what has become a multiplatform project inspired by the Afrofuturist movement.

In our forthcoming seminar he explores the inspiration behind his work, particularly his interest in African syncretic cultures, contemporary race discourse and (post) colonialism. He examines why Afrofuturism offers to his mind a way of concretising a vison of Black identities beyond the current constructions of race which he argues can become circular rather than pioneering. The talk will feature critical and creative reflection
