Dr Tamsin Badcoe’s ‘Edmund Spenser and the romance of space’ has won the University English Book Prize 2020.

Senior Lecturer Tamsin Badcoe's Edmund Spenser and the romance of space has won the University English Book Prize for 2020.  The judges called it 'the standout entry in an impressive field', the largest in the history of the prize.  The shortlisting committee had praised its ‘intellectual complexity’ and ‘innovative use of intertexts’, including cosmographical and navigational texts.  They called it ‘an outstanding work – original, rigorous, and a highly significant contribution to current literary studies.’

The study reads Spenser’s poetry in relation to space and movement between spaces, and offers encounters with literary environments including coastlines, wetlands and islands.  To find out more, see details at Manchester University Press.

The University English prize is awarded annually for a first monograph and four books were shortlisted this year. You can see full details at the University English website.

Congratulations, Tamsin!
