Madhu Krishnan and Tom Sperlinger receive Strategic Research Fund
31 March 2017
Dr Madhu Krishnan and Tom Sperlinger have been awarded funding from the University's Strategic Research Fund, to support a new partnership with the Mawazo Africa Writing Institute, which aims to nurture and support new fiction writers on the African continent through workshops and mentoring. Mawazo is run by Doreen Baingana, a Ugandan novelist and short story writer who was a BIRTHA visiting speaker at Bristol in 2016, and Farida Beg. The funding is designed to help Madhu and Tom work with Doreen and Farida on developing pedagogies and an online platform to support the creative writing workshops.
"This news is especially timely" Tom commented "given that we are now in the process of expanding our creative writing provision and will be appointing new lecturers for September 2017. This project also has exciting synergies with Madhu's wider research on the relationships between literary institutions, publishing practices and cultural production on the African continent. We hope it is the start of a fruitful partnership with Mawazo and look forward to learning from, and working with, Doreen and Farida!" The Department sends its warmest congratulations to Madhu and Tom and looks forward to a longer-term collaboration with Mawazo.
