Alumnus: Bowen

As a child, Bowen Dong starred in the hit film Little Red Flowers. He went on to complete our International Foundation Programme and is now studying BA Theatre and Film at the University of Bristol.

Can you tell us about your acting career?

I’ve been acting since I was in kindergarten. One director found me and wanted me to act in his film Little Red Flowers. After that, many directors and producers wanted me to act for them.

When I was in middle school, I was in a drama club. That is when I fell in love with drama. At 17 or 18, I started to do my own theatre, independent theatre. That was the reason I chose to study in the UK.

What made you choose Bristol?

I visited Bristol and thought it was a beautiful city. When I came here for the foundation programme, I decided to stay for undergraduate – and maybe postgraduate too.

What advice would you give new students?

I would say: keep reading and keep asking questions. Also, you should explore Bristol, because Bristol is bigger than you might imagine. Try to explore more areas, more places, more restaurants.

Was the International Foundation Programme helpful?

Yes, of course. When I first came to the UK, my English level was really bad. Now, we can sit and talk like this. That’s quite big progress for me.

Also, the study style here is to read and find information and make your own arguments. I think that is quite a change for Chinese students, because we have a different study style.

The International Foundation Programme is a good link for Chinese students coming to the UK.

What were the teaching staff like?

In my own experience, classes were very lively. One of our teachers was a very funny, lively person. He would always play games with us and make the lessons fun. Another of our teachers was very kind, even when we got something wrong.

Do you enjoy living in Bristol?

Yes, of course! My favourite part is the Saturday basketball team. I’ve joined a Chinese basketball team. It is more like a social club and every Saturday I go to play with them. It’s a relaxing part of my study life.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I might go back to China and do some drama education stuff. I will continue acting, directing and maybe producing things too. I will do theatre workshops part time – as my hobby, I guess – and I will also keep studying.
