The 9th ACCIS Conference, held jointly with the NCC on 13th September at the Bristol-based National Composites Centre, has been deemed a great success. The conference, which attracted nearly 300 delegates showcased the latest developments in composites research and manufacture.

Delegates from industry and academia gathered in the impressive workshop space of the National Composites Centre for the conference, which was the first ever to be held in conjunction with the NCC.  The exhibit area, featured a full size yacht and a cross section of an aircraft wing.  The space provided an interesting backdrop for attendees to browse poster displays featuring recent ACCIS research developments.

Morning presentations in the staged area of the workshop featured current research within ACCIS. After a welcoming introduction by Professor Michael Wisnom, guest speaker Professor Ignaas Verpoest, Chairman of Leuven Materials Research Centre delivered an overview of recent developments in the toughening of composites. Presentations from ACCIS academics, Dr Valeska Ting, Professor Stephen Hallett, Dr Wendel Sebastian and Professor Kevin Potter followed.  The morning was rounded off by a series of one minute quickfire deliveries by ACCIS researchers and a prize giving for winners of the Images of Composites Research Competition.

The afternoon event was introduced by the NCC's Chief Technology Officer, Dr Enrique Garcia.  An array of presentations from NCC representatives examined the latest advances in composite manufacturing including, design and simulation, materials and processes, and digital manufacturing.

The day proved to be both informative and rewarding as a valuable networking opportunity whilst stimulating some great ideas for future opportunities.

ACCIS looks forward to building on this success with next year's forthcoming 10th annual conference.
