Venturers' Voice

Welcome to Venturers' Voice

A virtual home for staff/student liaison within the School of Computing, Electronics & Engineering Maths (SCEEM).

On the department student pages you will find information about student reps, minutes and actions from SSLC meetings,  ways to make suggestions, details of staff, news and more:

As a school we encourage staff and students to work together to foster a positive and productive environment.  We continually seek to improve the school, from the facilities in the building to the units and programmes on offer, from teaching methods to support from the administrative staff.

Student feedback plays a vital role in this. Here is how you can make your voice heard:

Speak to staff

If you have a query regarding your course, you can speak with the unit organiser, your personal tutor, year tutor, programme director or Head of Department.

The School operates an open door policy and remember that the support staff in MVB 2.19, Ground floor, Merchant Venturers Building are always here to help too.

Student reps and the Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC)

Each year group for each department has at least one student representative, elected by students. They can raise issues which affect groups of students at regular committees and act on behalf of students to provide valuable feedback to programme staff which will go on to shape the future of the course.

It is the responsibility of a Student rep to obtain your opinions, concerns and suggestions and to inform you of department decisions which may affect you.  Find out who your reps are and read meeting minutes.

Emailing students

A how-to guide which outlines how you can email students by cohort and by unit is below:

Forums

Each department operates a forum system which allows you to discuss issues with staff and peers.

  • Computer Science - an online forum where you can ask questions related to that unit. Staff check these regularly and they are a good way of getting a timely response. There are also more general forums for topics such as job opportunities and option choices.
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering uses Blackboard for unit information and as part of that there are discussion boards on which students can post.
  • Engineering Maths - TBC
  • SCEEM SSLC - the School will hold 2 SSLC's, 1 per term, where you can give feedback on any issues you wish the School to deal with.

Feedback questionnaires

At the end of each teaching block you have the opportunity to give feedback on the units you have taken which helps to assess those units and gives future years guidance when selecting units. These questionnaires are used to inform changes in curriculum, content of courses and the way in which teaching is delivered. They are discussed at departmental meetings and feed into the annual programme review.

Social Media

Each department has Facebook pages, run by students. If you're not already a member of the page for your year group, speak with your student representative.

Equality Radar for students

The Faculty of Engineering are launching a new Equality radar for staff and students to use. This was agreed as part of SCEEM’s Equality and Diversity action plan, as part of our commitment to understanding the working culture for both staff and students. Note that this is a data capture tool and not a reporting tool for people wishing to make a complaint.
