Smoking levels are set to plummet after the successful vote for a total smoking ban meaning that from this summer the only place you'll be able to light up without a £50 on the spot fine will be your humble abode. How will this affect the NHS? Will the money lost from tobacco taxes be reimbursed by a healthier nation? Tobacco companies aren't sitting quiet trough this backlash against smoke. The development of 'snus', a smoke free and apparently harmless alternative to cigarettes, has brought lung cancer rates in Sweden down to the lowest in the EU. Is this an addiction breakthrough, or just another way of increasing consumption by new product development? With this plenary we aim to open up the debate surrounding tobacco; at home and abroad, in the industry, government and medical services. |
