The School of Chemistry welcomes undergraduate and postgraduate students from outside of the UK and actively encourages applications from suitably qualified candidates. Undergraduates should contact the admissions secretary. Postgraduate students can undertake PhDs in any of the areas of research currently underway in the Department.
The following are the main sources of funding available for overseas students:
These provide payment at the rate for EU students, together with a maintenance grant at the standard Research Council rate. Overseas students will have to find a further £6430 p.a. which is the difference between the EU tuition fee of £2610 and the 'overseas' tuition fee of £9040 (for 1998/99). There is no application form.
These awards pay the difference between the 'overseas' and 'home' tuition fees (i.e. the £6430 mentioned in the preceding paragraph). Application forms are available early in January from: The Student Finance Office, University of Bristol, Students' Union, Queens Road, Bristol BS8 1LN; Email: sue.dors@bris.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is 2nd April 1999. The competition is very strong. To apply for an award, you must first be accepted by the School of Chemistry and then make a joint application with the School of Chemistry. An application typically takes six weeks, so an early start is essential.
Commonwealth citizens are eligible to apply for these funds. Details can be obtained from the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in your country of permanent residence or from The Association of Commonwealth Universities, 36 Gordon Square, London, WC1H OPF; Tel: + 0171 387 8572; Email: info@acu.ac.uk
These scholarships are open to US graduates. Information on Fulbright Scholarships can be obtained from USA institutions which undertake primary selection of applicants. Information on Marshall Scholarships is available from Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, John Foster House, 36 Gordon Square London, WCIH OPF. Email: mhilton@crdep.mail.fco.gov.uk
It is worthwhile contacting your nearest British Council Office which will hold information on British Council Grants which may be applicable to your country.
If your first degree was not taught in English, you will need to take an English Language test, for example British Council IELTS, TOEFL, etc. [IELTS is preferred]. It is a policy of this University that overseas students achieve a minimum standard of 6.5 in the IELTS test of English Language (or a TOEFL score of 610) before commencement of study. If you have not achieved this standard at the time of application DO NOT DESPAIR. The University runs an English Language Course and other Language Schools in Bristol offer similar courses allowing you to improve your English before starting work for your degree. These courses are at an additional cost.
Overseas students are sent information from the Accommodation Office and are guaranteed somewhere to live, providing the forms are returned within the time limit. EU and UK students usually find their own accommodation but there are people here to help . Within the Inorganic Section we keep a list of contacts and will usually be able to find a suitable place.

At Bristol we have an International Students Centre which organised social events and activities for all the overseas students. These include such things as trips to areas of local interest (Oxford, London, Stonehenge, etc), group dances, and regular get-togethers for lunch.
