There is a huge variety of career opportunities available to dentists.

Most work as self-employed practitioners in general practice, providing dental care to the public under the National Health Service (NHS) or privately.

A General Dental Practitioner (GDP) typically leads a team comprising Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), such as dental hygienists and therapists, nurses, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists, as well as ancillary staff including a practice manager and receptionists.

Others provide dental services in hospital or community settings, or for the armed forces.

Some dentists undertake postgraduate education which can open the door to specialist clinical practice, or careers in teaching and research.

Bristol Dental School runs a number of postgraduate taught and research programmes.
