ACCIS seminar series: Probing Interfaces in Cellulose Nanocomposites

16 November 2011, 2.00 PM - 16 November 2011, 2.00 PM

Speaker: Professor Stephen Eichhorn (University of Exeter) | Venue: LT 1.18, QB

Speaker: Professor Stephen Eichhorn, Chair of Materials Science, University of Exeter

Venue: LT 1.18, Queen's Building

This talk will cover the use of Raman spectroscopy to follow the deformation micromechanics of cellulose-based nanocomposites. A number of test-cases will be presented, showing how it is possible to follow local interfacial effects in composites comprising a range of cellulose nanofibres; namely microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), bacterial cellulose (BC) and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs). It will be shown that quantitative data can be obtained from these measurements, allowing better choices to be made when forming these interesting materials.
