New Professor of Greek
13 February 2017
We are delighted to announce that Patrick Finglass, currently at the University of Nottingham, will be joining the Department in September 2017 as the Henry Overton Wills Professor of Greek. Professor Finglass is a world-leading scholar of Greek literature of the sixth and fifth centuries BC, and has published a series of notable editions including Sophocles’ Electra (2007) and Ajax (2011), and Stesichorus (2014). His appointment further establishes Bristol as one of the world’s most diverse and intellectually rigorous centres for the study of Greek drama and its reception.
The Wills Chair of Greek was one of the three original chairs endowed by H.O. Wills, the first Chancellor of the University of Bristol. Distinguished occupants include H.D.F. Kitto, N.G.L. Hammond, Geoffrey Kirk, John Gould, and the current holder Robert Fowler.
