InGOS is an EU funded Integrating Activity (IA) project, supporting the integration of and access to existing national research infrastructures, targeted at improving and extending the European observation capacity for non-CO2 greenhouse gases. There is a big need to support and integrate the observing capacity of Europe for non-CO2 greenhouse gases. The emissions of these gases are very uncertain and it is unknown how future climate changes will feedback into these (mainly land use coupled) emissions. The infrastructure project will work on standardizing the measurements, strengthening the existing observation sites into supersites, capacity building in new member states, and prepare for integration of the network with other networks already in place or currently being set up (e.g. ICOS, the carbon equivalent of InGOS).

The ACRG involvement in InGOS is focused on:

Provision of CH4, N2O, CO and H2 data from the atmospheric station at Mace Head, Ireland

Improving the measurement capabilities for halogenated greenhouse gases,

Establishing a calibration matrix that relates the calibration scales of each laboratory to one another. This will enable the creation of an integrated, European halocarbon database,

Establishing a quality assurance system for European halocarbons measurements with a calibration standard centre and a system of routinely comparing secondary(tertiary) and working(quaternary) standards with the primary AGAGE calibration scales maintained by Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO).

Integrating and harmonising trace gas measurements in Europe, with the result of having a sustainable and reliable observation network for highly time-resolved data across Europe.
