Steven Street wins "I'm a scientist, get me out of here" - drug discovery zone
22 November 2016
Congratulations to PhD student Steven Street from the Galan Group who was the last person standing in the Drug Delivery Zone of the online outreach event "I'm a scientist, get me out of here"
"I’m a Scientist Get me out of here” is an online outreach event where school students get to meet and interact with scientists over 2 weeks. It’s an X-Factor style competition between the scientists, where the students get to vote and decide on who they want to win.
The students ask the scientist’s questions on anything they want, both online and via some fast paced live-text chats. There are several different zones (some of them themed) and 5 scientists in each. Each day in week 2 a scientist is evicted, until there is one left. The winner of each zone wins a prize of £500 to communicate their work to the public.
Steven Street - from the Chemical Synthesis CDT - said: “It was a pleasure to be able to take part in I’m a Scientist get me out of here. The students were all very enthusiastic, and asked many difficult and challenging questions on everything from drug discovery and science to politics, philosophy and religion! The other scientists were all very good, and I think we all learnt quite a lot over the two weeks! This was an excellent competition which has helped me to remember why I love science, and has hopefully helped to inspire some young people into further studying science subjects. My idea for the prize money was to set up a website that allows school students to browse research projects and researchers by A-Level subject. This will hopefully help them with choosing what subjects to study further, as it wasn’t obvious to me as a school student what research was, or what a broad array of different projects you could work on. Watch this space for more information!”
