"Promiscuous sensor elements construct potent chemical tongues that discriminate whisky and white wines"

Water soluble fluorescent conjugated polyelectrolytes (i.e. conjugated polymers, CoP) interact with analytes by differential fluorescence quenching. Combing several CoPs results in powerful sensor arrays, chemical tongues (CoPT), that-upon data workup by linear discriminant analysis (LDA)- identify/discriminate almost any analyte from proteins to white wines, but the underlying rules for the functioning of CoPTs are poorly understood. We will look at potential explanations as to how signal generation in these tongues can be explained.
