Successful CMM Away Day 2018
12 January 2018
The School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine held its Annual Away Day on 11 January 2018 at the Wills Conference Centre.
The day was well attended by over 130 academics, postdocs and postgraduate students, who watched a number of talks from both staff and postgraduate students from across the School. The day was opened by a talk from the Dean-Elect for the new Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Jeremy Tavare, who talked about the opportunities and challenges posed by the development of a new Faculty.
There were a number of talks from the three main research streams, cancer biology, infection and immunity and stem cell therapies. This year we invited three of our Research Fellows, Dr's Marc Amoyel, Andrew Davidson and Emma Vincent to chair the three main sessions. The day was ended by an inspiring talk from our new Head of School, Professor Anne Ridley FRS about her research: 'Rho GTPases: signalling in cell migration'.
Professor Christoph Wuelfing, School Research Director said "It was great to see academics, postdocs and postgraduate students connecting and talking to each other about their work with those in the School, but also to our invited guests."
Mia Khan, the School Manager said "The day is a key highlight in the School calendar, bringing the CMM community together, to present and share the amazing science that is happening in School."
A key part of the day is the 'poster competition' and to allow for wider competition this year it was widened to two streams, postgraduate and postdoctoral staff. The poster competition allows postgraduates and postdocs a platform amongst peers to discuss their research and a chance to win one of three prizes.
A further addition this year, we introduced a new science image competition which was open for all to participate, and the winners were announced by Professor Christoph Wuelfing.
Winner of the image competition: Alice Sherrard, for her image titled 'Planet Nucleon' (£50)
Winners of the postgraduate poster competition:
First prize (£125): Amy Dey (supervisor, Professor Stefan Robert)
Second prize (£75): Alice Sherrard (supervisor, Dr Abderrahmane Kaidi)
Third Prize (£50): Grace Edmunds (Supervisor, Dr David Morgan)
Winners of the postdoctoral poster competition:
