How did the butterfly get its colours? The evolution and genetics of colour and pattern in Heliconius butterflies

Abstract: The Heliconius butterflies are a neotropical genus with bright warning wing colour patterns and extensive Mullerian mimicry between species.

They also have highly variable wing patterns, with several species showing distinct geographic races. I will talk about some of my work identifying the genes that control this variation. My most recent research concerns the evolution of structural iridescent colour in this group.
