Intercalated degrees

With an intercalated degree, you can take an additional BSc, BA or Master’s level qualification during one extra year of study alongside your medical, dental or veterinary degree. We welcome all intercalating UK and international medical, dental and veterinary students onto our intercalated degrees at the School of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences.

As an intercalating student you will join our current third-year undergraduates learning what it is like to be involved in research and how to think like a scientist. You will develop critical and analytical skills which will benefit you enormously in your future career as a doctor, dentist or vet.

Within all our programmes we aim to inspire students with our mission to ‘turn science into medicine’. We are training the next generation of life scientists to understand the molecular and cellular basis of human disease and translate scientific discoveries into applications that could change the lives of individuals and communities.

Students will join a community of world experts working on some of the biggest threats and opportunities in human health, from cancer, anti-microbial resistance and COVID-19 to regenerative medicine and engineering biology.

Intercalating in the school has helped me to explore an entirely new expansive world of medicine. The translational nature of my project has further enforced a specific clinical interest and sharpened my focus on pursuing related work in the future. The course itself was brilliant with friendly faculty, project supervisors, and an all-round great teaching culture with many lecturers at the forefront of their fields.
