Abstract: In 1938, in her paper “Logical and Metaphysical Necessity”, Martha Kneale argued that metaphysically necessary propositions are not knowable a priori, due to the role that experience has to play in our knowledge of themI present her argument, and compare it to Kripke’s later arguments that at least some metaphysical necessities are not knowable a priori. I argue that Kneale deserves a more prominent place in our history of the development of thought about modality.
