University of Bristol Amelia Edwards Memorial Lecture in Egyptology: Victor Loret at Saqqara and in the Valley of the Kings
Professor Patrizia Piancentini
Priory Road Lecture Theatre, 12 Priory Road, Bristol BS8 1TU
Loret (1859-1946) was the head of the Egyptian antiquities organisation from 1897-99, and made important discoveries at the necropolis of Saqqara and in the Valley of the Kings – the latter including a number of pharaohs’ tombs, and nine of their mummies. The records of his work were long feared lost, but they were ‘rediscovered’ in 2002 and acquired by the Università degli Studi di Milano. In this lecture, the Professor of Egyptology at this institution will explore these records and the light they shed on Loret’s excavations.
