The Derek Walcott Postgraduate Reading Group

27 April 2018, 4.00 PM - 1 December 2017, 5.00 PM

Priory Road E Block, 2E4

Postgraduates interested in classical antiquity and its legacy in (post-)modernist writers are warmly invited to attend this weekly group, hosted by Dr Laura Jansen of the Department of Classics and Ancient History and Mr Richard Cole (Classics PGR). The reading group will be the fifth in an already well-established series sponsored by the Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition, including the Calvino Postgraduate Reading Group of 2016-17; the Nietzsche for Non-Philosophers postgraduate reading group of 2015-16; the Borges Postgraduate Reading Group of 2014-15; and the Browning Reading Group of 2013-14.

Our focus this year is on the oeuvre of Saint Lucian author, Derek Walcott (1930-2017), whose writings include poetry, plays, and critical essays. We will be looking at works such as Omeros, essays from What the Twilight Says, including ‘The Muse of History’ and ‘Epic Fragments’, and Walcott’s own artwork. Participants are expected to commit to regular attendance and taking turns in starting off the discussion. The group will run five weekly sessions.
