History of Art PhD student awarded South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership Studentship
16 July 2018
David Luquero, a PhD student in the Department of History of Art, has recently been awarded an SWW DTP studentship for supporting the development of a research project on the Spanish painter Ismael González de la Serna (1895 – 1968). Following the collaborative ethos encouraged by the DTP studentship, an interdisciplinary team composed by Prof Mike O’Mahony (Department of History of Art, University of Bristol) and Dr Tim Rees (Department of History, University of Exeter) will oversee the supervision of the project. Despite having developed a successful, international career during the inter-war period, there are still plenty of questions regarding De la Serna. By following a social history approach, this project focuses on issues as immigrant artists in the inter-war Paris, the influence of the critics and the art market on De la Serna's style, or the adverse effects that political upheaval and economic instability had on the painters' career during the 1930s.
