New donation to print collection

The History of Art department has recently acquired a new print for its Print Collection, the kind gift of an anonymous donor. The work, by contemporary artist Boris Zaborikhin, is entitled 'Proletarian Strength (Пролетарская сила).

Zabirokhin is a Russian painter and graphic artist, born in Leningrad in 1947. In 1970 he graduated from the Vera Mukhina Higher Arts and Crafts School in Leningrad and since 1968 has participated in republican, national and international exhibitions. He became a member of the Artists’ Union of Russia in 1975. Since 2000 he has been the leader of the creative association ‘The Children of Arkhip Kuindzhi’ in St. Petersburg. He was awarded the ‘Golden Apple’ prize at the International Biennial in Bratislava for illustrations published in ‘Russian Folk Fairy Tales’ by O. Afanasyev (Moscow, Publishing house ‘Vita Nova’, 2008). He currently lives in St. Petersburg. His works include prints, oil and tempera painting. He has illustrated over 30 books and created over 100 book-plates. Examples of his works can be found in the collections of the Hermitage, the State Russian Museum and the Russian National Library in St Petersburg, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and in Art Museums in Bristol, Vatican City, London, Thessaloniki and Prague.
