Joanna Karlgaard completes PhD

The History of Art department congratulates Joanna Karlgaard on the completion of her PhD. Her thesis, entitled Frederick Sandys and Victorian Illustration was supervised by Prof. Liz Prettejohn and Dr Grace Brockington and was examined by Dr Colin Cruise (Aberystwyth) and Dr Samantha Matthews (Bristol)

The thesis focuses on Frederick Sandys (1829-1904) as an illustrator, and examines his work in the wider contexts of Pre-Raphaelitism and Victorian print culture and publishing. It offers a focused re-evaluation of Sandys’s illustrations, leading to a reappraisal of his artistic practice as one based upon intermediality and replication of imagery.

Designed by Frederick Sandys, engraved by Dalziel Brothers, The Advent of Winter, published in The Quiver, January 1866 (illustration to a poem by Thomas Hood), wood engraving, 16.9 x 12.2 cm
