Bristol MA graduate wins funded PhD studentship at the University of Kansas.

Jenni Styles (MA, 2010) has won a highly competitive Graduate Teaching Assistantship to fund her doctoral research in American Studies at the University of Kansas, USA. Her thesis will examine the popularity of anime media among contemporary American audiences, and how it reflects attitudes towards Japanese gender and sexuality during the American occupation of Japan after WWI. The project builds on Jenni's Bristol MA dissertation on the depiction of gender in sci-fi and anime. She writes that 'everyone at Bristol was hugely supportive of my work. It gave me much more confidence in myself and my abilities, which was really essential in applying for the PhD in America! I think simply being among such a diverse student body and faculty can't help but be inspiring. Seeing so many people explore the world thorough their work definitely opened my eyes to the possibilities that were out there.'
