About Chatham House

Founded in 1920 in the aftermath of the First World War by delegates to the Paris Peace Conference, Chatham House is Europe's leading independent, international affairs think tank and membership organisation that brings together people and organisations with an interest in international affairs. We provide an independent forum in which academia, business, diplomats, the media, NGOs, politicians, policy makers and researchers can interact in an open and impartial environment.

Chatham House Events Programme

  • Members' Events Programme of some one hundred events per year. September's speakers include Nobel Prize winning economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Dr Heiko Takenaka, Japan's Minister for Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications and Minister of State for Privatization of the Postal Services and one of the authors of Japan's economic revival, barrister and law professor Philippe Sands QC on the state of the world five years after 9/11
  • Under 35s Forum organised by and for the younger members of Chatham House to discuss the international issues of interest to them. Previous speakers include Frank Gardner, Security Correspondent, BBC; James Reynolds, Middle East Correspondent, BBC; Martin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator, Financial Times; Christopher Lockwood, Asia Editor, The Economist and Dr Razeen Sally, Senior Lecture, International Political Economy, LSE
  • Research events run by our regional (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Russia Eurasia) and our thematic (Energy, Environment & Development, International Economics, International Law and International Security) programmes. These small seminars, workshops and roundtable discussion meetings allow for more in depth debate

Our publications have achieved an enviable reputation for their considered and accessible approach combined with policy relevance, topicality and academic rigour.

  • The World Today, our monthly magazine, was founded in 1945. Contributors include Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan; former NATO Secretary-General George Robertson; former British Foreign Secretary Lord Hurd of Westwell; Cherie Booth QC; Professor Lord Desai, Professor of Economics, London School of Economics; UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Jean-Marie Guéhenno and John Githongo, former Chief of the Kenyan Anti-Corruption Unit

Chatham House Library & Information Service

  • Our extensive print and electronic collections focus on politics, economics, security and the environment with 150,000 books and pamphlets, 300 periodicals and 20 current newspapers in English and other languages. Up to 15 books available on complimentary loan and wifi internet access is also available.

  • The Chatham House Members' Zone Website gives anytime anywhere access to our activities at your convenience. Check the events calendar for forthcoming events; read transcripts and listen to recordings of Chatham House events; download briefing papers, research reports, meeting summaries and other publications on the war on terror, Al-Qaeda, trade, development and the environment; access the current issues and archive of The World Today and International Affairs

About the Student Membership Discount

As a Chatham House Member Partner, students of the International Affairs Society who wish to join Chatham House benefit from a student membership discount. Student membership gives all the benefits of membership at a significant discount to the advertised fee rates for membership of Chatham House, including the ability to bring a guest to Members' Events, the Under 35s Forum and Research Events and complimentary borrowing of up to 15 books.

Membership of Chatham House is valid for a year and renewable annually on the anniversary of joining. To apply, please complete and return the application form [94 kB, Word Document].
