Monosaccharides and amino acids are multifunctional compounds. This course will explore the chemistry of these important classes of natural products by concentrating on individual functionalities. Monosaccharides will be discussed in terms of the chemistry of alcohols (primary and secondary) and carbonyls (ketones and aldehydes) while the chemistry of amines and carboxylic acids will form the basis of understanding amino acids. Structural features (such as the anomeric effect) will also be considered and their bearing on reactivity examined. An important linking theme will be the use of protective groups and their chemo- and regio-selectivities. The use of protective groups during the synthesis of bio-active polysaccharides and polypeptides will be discussed.

NOTE:- Some of these pages make use of MDL plugin Chemscape Chime™, this allows 3D molecular structures to be displayed in web pages. If your browser has Chemscape Chime™ installed properly you will see a rotating toluene molecule below. If not, the plugin can be dowloaded free from MDL.

If you see the molecule but are not familiar with using Chime, refer to this handy guide.
