POSME: Research Group on Politics and Society in Mediterranean Europe

Welcome to the POSME Home Page

POSME is one of the research groups organised by members of the UK-based Political Studies Association. Members of POSME have an active research or teaching interest in the politics and society of the European countries in the Mediterranean basin. The group meets formally at the PSA annual conference (last meeting at the University of Nottingham, March 1999) as well as informally in parallel with conferences and workshop meetings all across the UK.

The group has as a goal the promotion of links between members in order to facilitate the growth of research in the field. The prospect of 'deepening' of European integration makes the EU Mediterranean countries, their politics and society increasingly relevant to political interaction at the European level. The possibility of 'widening' the European Union towards the Mediterranean (i.e. Cyprus and Malta) naturally increases interest in the politics and society of the region.

Services to POSME Members: POSME provides its members with a copy of its research register which contains information on social science researchers with an interest in the field. POSME regularly convenes panels as a part of the annual PSA conference as well as organising workshops and short conferences. Members of POSME are also eligible for reductions in subscriptions to specialist publications and academic journals.

We are always interested on any pertinent information on ongoing research projects, forthcoming conferences, recently submitted research dissertations, recent publications, research forums and work (or web links) of similar research associations. Information on any activities will be promoted through our web pages. We also welcome any suggestions you may have on future activities for POSME.

For further information on the work of POSME, you can contact the co-convenors:

A series of EU funded summer schools take place annually:

The first was held between 6-18 July 1998 in Crete with the theme: "The reshaping of the welfare state".

In 1999 the summer school took place in Lisbon and focused on "Decentralisation and Federalism".

In the year 2000 the summer school will take place in Siena and Florence and will be concerned with "The Impact of the EU on Southern Europe".
