Postgraduate Student Internships at IOM

In 2017, 2 postgraduate students from the University of Bristol will be the first to undertake internships at the IOM GMDAC offices in Berlin, as part of an agreement between WUN (piloting a version of the Research Mobility Programme (RMP)) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), whose strategic alliance was signed on 2 April 2016. The WUN RMP encourages personal and academic development of individuals, primarily early in their research careers, to equip them with the skills needed for future international academic success. The programme allows young scholars to advance their knowledge-base within their field of study, establish new contacts and mentors, and enhance their graduate dissertations through the experience gained in studying in other research cultures.

• Eligibility and funding: 2 PG students with the requisite skills and experience will receive £1000 to cover both travel to and from GMDAC offices in Berlin and accommodation & subsistence.

The Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) in Berlin is responsible for providing all stakeholders with a better understanding of global migration data. GMDAC is involved in a three main areas of work: 

• Knowledge management: Promote a better understanding and use of migration data, including IOM data
• Capacity building: Enhance IOM’s efforts to build the data capacities of Member states and Observers
• Research and analysis: Provide timely data and fact-based analysis on global migration trends and policies

Due to the IOM GMDAC's portfolio of dynamic, global, strategic initiatives, we do not provide a comprehensive list of potential projects. However, three areas of current interest and possibility for interns are: 

• Analysis of Gallup World Poll data 
• Research and Analysis to support the establishment of GMDAC’s Global Migration Data Portal
• Development of capacity building tools in the area of migration data

Duties and responsibilities of intern:

• Contribute to the development of the above goals, work areas, project(s) and products of GMDAC
• Support the production of several regular dissemination products (briefs, presentations, and reports)
• Compile, prepare, clean and manage data
• Contribute to GMDAC publications
• Contribute to report writing, visualizations and presentations on the work produced in the context of this program
