UNIVERSITY
OF BRISTOL VETERINARY PATHOLOGY TUTORIALS
-
Most of the tutorials are
'intranet-only'.
This means they can only normally be accessed from within the University
network. However, off campus students can gain access to intranet-only tutorials
using the
off-site proxy service. You will need to follow the instructions
carefully and will need your University username and password to get access. This diagram shows you how to setup your browser for access when using a
broadband connection. There is now an automated setup file available which will
change these settings for you.

-
A lot of the tutorial content is displayed in Adobe
Acrobat (PDF) format. If you find that you cannot print some of these
files that is intentional (at the request of the lecturer). To view the range of
pages in a tutorial click the 'Pages' tab at the left hand side of the Acrobat
reader screen. This will open a side bar containing thumbnail views of all the
slides.
-
PDF's cause Internet Explorer 8 to hang or crash while
downloading: this is a known problem with early versions of IE8.
Other browsers aren't affected. If it's not possible to use a different browser
then the Adobe Acrobat Reader preferences need to be changed so as NOT to open PDFs in the browser. To do this start Acrobat Reader, select Edit>Preferences
and click on the menu item Internet in the left hand column. Uncheck the box
labelled Display PDF in Browser.
-
Adding your own comments to PDFs
This is enabled on some content but in order to add your comments you must first
download the PDF file to your computer. If you then open it you should see the
typewriter tool enabled in Acrobat Reader. This appears as a keyboard icon in
the toolbar, clicking on it allows you to type anywhere on the page. You can
then save the file again to keep your comments.
-
Read a PDF with Read Out Loud
You will need to download the PDF
file to your PC and open it in Acrobat Reader to use this feature.
The Read Out Loud feature reads aloud the text in a PDF, including the text in
comments and alternate text descriptions for images and fillable fields. In
tagged PDFs, content is read in the order in which it appears in the document’s
logical structure tree. In untagged documents, the reading order is inferred,
unless a reading order has been specified in the Reading preferences.
Read Out Loud uses the available voices installed on your system. If you have
SAPI 4 or SAPI 5 voices installed from text-to-speech or language applications,
you can choose them to read your PDFs.
Note: Read Out Loud isn’t a screen reader, and some operating systems may not
support it.
Activate or deactivate Read Out Loud
You must activate Read Out Loud before you can use it. You can deactivate
Read Out Loud to free system resources and improve performance of other
operations.
Do one of the following:
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Activate Read Out Loud.
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Deactivate Read Out Loud.
You can also use the Select Tool to locate text. Activate Read Out Loud, and
then choose Tools > Select Tool. Use the up/down and left/right arrow keys to
navigate through the document.
You can hear where the Select Tool has been placed, such as a heading or
paragraph.
Read a PDF with Read Out Loud
1.Navigate to the page that you want to read.
2.Do one of the following:
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Read This Page Only.
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Read To End Of Document.
Read PDF form fields out loud
1.In the Reading panel of the Preferences dialog box, select Read Form
Fields in the Read Out Loud Options section.
2.In the PDF form, press Tab to select the first form field.
3.Make entries and selections as needed, and then press Tab to move to the next
field, repeating this step until the form is completed. Acrobat reads the state
of selected check boxes and radio buttons.
Note: Read Out Loud does not echo your keystrokes. To hear what you have typed,
use a screen reader.
Interrupt reading out loud
Do one of the following:
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Pause.
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Resume.
■Choose View > Read Out Loud > Stop.

The tutorial pages have been checked to function
correctly with the following browsers:
Netscape version 7 and above; Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4 to 8 (with
the proviso that version 8 has had some problems loading PDFs - see above);
Opera version 7.02 and above; all versions of Firefox, Google Chrome, & Safari. Some tutorials require you to use
Internet Explorer
to display converted PowerPoint presentations which will not run correctly in
other browsers. Others may require Acobat
Reader to be installed to open PDF files. Both Internet Explorer and Acobat
are free programs and may be downloaded by
following the links given.
-
Internet Explorer: now has a pop-up blocker.
This must be turned off for tutorials that display images
when clicking the pop-up icons
.
This can be achieved by clicking the small blocker icon on the lower toolbar and
selecting "Allow pop-ups from this site", or open Tools>Internet
Options>Privacy>Settings and add *.bristol.ac.uk to the list of allowed sites.
Or simply turn off the pop-up blocker altogether.
-
Netscape 6:
This version of Netscape occasionally opens the wrong sized or shaped pop-up
window. If this happens close the pop-up window with the X
in the top right corner of the window (close button top left for Macintosh)
and re-open it. Java scripted 'BACK' links do not always work with
Netscape 6 (there is one at the bottom of this page); if Netscape doesn't
open the previous window when the link is clicked, use the reload button
on the toolbar.
-
Opera 6 and 7: Opera 6 and 7
don't size the tutorial pop-up windows correctly, they often use the initial
pop-up window size for all subsequent images. (This is fixed in Opera
v7.02 and above) To make the pop-up window fit the image you may have to close
the window with the
X in the top right corner of
the window (close button top left for Macintosh) or manually resize the
window.
-
Older browser software: The
image pop-up windows may not open or close properly if using versions older
than Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer 4. If the image windows do open
they should be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner of each
window (close button top left for Macintosh). If this is not done
the image pop-up will disappear behind the main window when the page is
scrolled or another icon is clicked. To view the pop-up window when
this happens click on its taskbar button or reduce the size of the main
browser window so that it remains visible.
-
Use the button links
at the bottom of each page to move to the next section. This
page explains their function. Alternatively, use the navigation
side bar to jump straight to a chosen section.
-
to display a picture which illustrates the current topic. The
images are displayed in pop-up windows. There is no need to close
each pop-up window with its 'X' button: clicking anywhere outside the pop-up
will close it.
-
Some tutorials have side bars with only a list
of numbered sections: to see the section
title move the mouse pointer over the section link and it will be displayed
in an alt text or tooltip label.
-
Font size: Fonts may appear smaller
than intended when using Internet Explorer. To rectify this click
View > Text Size on Internet Explorer's toolbar and select Medium.
-
Reloading: If
a frame needs to be reloaded for any reason the user should RIGHT CLICK
in the frame window and choose Reload or Refresh on the fly-out
menu rather than using the Reload or Refresh button on the toolbar.
If the toolbar button is used the tutorial may reload back to page 1.
-
If the images will not pop up and you are using
an up-to-date browser: Go to the tutorial introduction
page and see if the red JavaScript error message
is
displayed. If it is your browser is not JavaScript enabled and the
images will not appear. To enable JavaScript for Internet Explorer
click Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Enable Active
Scripting (near the bottom of the panel). For Netscape click Edit
> Preferences > Advanced, check the box labelled " Enable JavaScript"
and click OK. Reload the page. (Please note that the 'BACK' link
at the bottom of this page will not work either if JavaScript is disabled.)
For Opera click File > Quick Preferences > Enable JavaScript.
-
If you are using any kind of utility program (e.g..
Webwasher, Pop-up Stopper) that blocks pop-up windows: Turn it off.
-
