The University has an Infectious Diseases Control Committee which has devised a plan of action to be implemented in the event of an individual case or an outbreak of meningitis or other infectious disease that may present a risk to its students and staff.
In conjunction with Avon Health Protection Unit, it has arranged for the rapid tracing of contacts of any students affected and for appropriate screening or treatment to be offered, on a large scale if necessary. In the case of meningitis, for example, this may involve the use of antibiotics and/or vaccination. If required, the University will also implement a large-scale information programme and staff a special helpline.
The University's response to infectious disease falls under the guidance of the Health Protection Agency. Further information about infectious diseases can be found on the Health Protection Agency's website.
