Description

Gender, sexuality and bodies as intersecting phenomena are central to social and cultural organization and experience throughout the world. This unit will engage with social anthropological research on these topics which over the last four decades have become key areas of anthropological study. The unit will focus on ethnographic explorations of specific issues, and key themes, concepts, theories and debates that have occupied scholars of the anthropology of gender, sexuality and the body since the 1970s.

Unit aims

  • To introduce a range of anthropological research on topics relating to gender, sexuality and the body.
  • To enable students to explore cross-cultural variation and global interconnections in the practices, experiences, structures and processes relating to gender, sexuality and the body.
  • To enable students to develop an understanding of key concepts and theories in the anthropological research on gender, sexuality and the body and how they relate to each other.
  • Developing anthropological frameworks for understanding and analysing contemporary issues relating to gender, sexuality and the body

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the unit, the successful student will be able to:

1. Discuss in detail a range of anthropological research on gender, sexuality and the body throughout the world and synthesise research in order to persuade.

2. Explain and critically evaluate key concepts and theories on gender, sexuality and the body, and discuss how they relate to ethnographic research.

3. Apply cross-cultural perspectives to key issues and debates on gender, sexuality and the body.

4. Develop anthropological analyses of contemporary questions and debates surrounding gender, sexuality and the body.

11 hours interactive lectures, 11 hours seminars (including 8 hours of student-led seminars)

Summative assessment

  • Essay (50%; 2500 w) ILOs 1-3
  • Reflective notebook (50%; 2500 w). ILOs 1-4.

The individual reflective notebook (assessed at the end of the unit) is a weekly write-up and reflections upon the student-led seminars in which they participate.

Formative assessment

Student-led seminar as part of a group of 3-4 on assigned topic. The tutor is present to facilitate and to provide formative feedback.
