Description including Unit Aims

This unit will provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of risk analysis and management in the field of water resources engineering. It will cover the necessary basics of statistics and probability of risk, which will subsequently be applied to the different areas of water resources engineering, including floods and droughts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, successful students will be able to;

1. understand the concept of risk in water engineering,

2. understand probability and statistical concepts in risk analysis,

3. understand the principles of frequency analysis,

4. understand origin and limitations of data,

5. estimate floods in the UK context,

6. estimate low flows in the UK context,

7. estimate floods and low flows at ungauged location,

8. understand risk mitigation measures,

9. understand impacts of climate and land use change.
