Description including Unit Aims

To introduce the student to the clinical skills laboratory, and develop their clinical skills in periodontal instrumentation and conservative dentistry on manikin heads.

Aims:

  • To introduce and develop relevant clinical skills in periodontal on manikin heads.
  • To introduce the recording of dental indices including dental charting and the pre-clinical manipulation and use of periodontal instruments.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To be able to carry out periodontal indices and charting
  • To use safely and effectively a variety of hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments and rotary hand pieces
  • To be able to carry out instrument maintenance

Lecture Small group teaching Formative practical assessment of periodontal instrumentation

Assessment Information

  • Formative assessments  These include manikin periodontal instrumentation assessments  students must complete a set task in a given amount of time.
  • Summative assessments  students must pass an preclinical exam prior to treating patients and completing Operative techniques II
  • This consists of one x 1 hour written papers and a clinical task on a manikin heads. This assessment is weighted 50% written and 50% for the clinical task.
  • The pass mark for these exams is 50%.
