Description including Unit Aims

This mandatory 20-credit unit forms part of the International Pre-Master's Programme (IPP), which explores the way in which subject knowledge is communicated in English across a range of disciplines at and beyond Master’s level. Students will leave the programme fully equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to succeed at this level at a top British university and the confidence to communicate ideas with academics, peers or the public. This unit aims to:

  • develop reading and writing skills acquired in previous modules through application to an extended research project based on written sources related to your future studies;
  • present and practise core language and skills for formal academic oral presentations;
  • tackle typical language problems in your written academic English.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module students will be able to: use the library and internet to find appropriate academic sources in the discipline; read, understand and evaluate some literature in the field of study; select appropriate evidence from sources to support ideas; synthesise ideas from more than one source; plan, draft, redraft and edit an essay of 1,500 – 2,000 words which is well-organised, and clearly expressed in student's own words with appropriate referencing; present research orally; edit own written work effectively.
