The postgraduate degrees awarded by the Department are the one-year MPhil, the two-year MLitt and the three-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
Candidates for the PhD normally register for a two-year MLitt under the supervision of one or two members of staff and, should their progress prove satisfactory, their registration may then be transferred to a PhD in the course of their second year.
Postgraduates may register for a research degree directly after completing their undergraduate degree. They should normally expect to have a good 2:1 degree or above. Increasingly the major funding bodies will require candidates to complete a prior one-year taught course before registration for a research degree. The MAs described above are designed to provide the requisite training.
