In December the Centre for Buddhist Studies was delighted to welcome Dr Chiaki Ozawa, who is visiting Bristol as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Buddhist Studies for the next two years. Dr Ozawa is from Otani University in Kyoto, which is a leading Japanese university affiliated to the Jodo Shinshu tradition of Japanese Buddhism. Otani University is particularly well-known in the West as the university of the renowned Zen scholar D.T. Suzuki and publishes the leading journal The Eastern Buddhist. Dr Ozawa specialises in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and while in Bristol she will be working on her own research project and consulting with Bristol colleagues in Buddhist Studies, as well as attending classes in order to gain some insight into the way issues in Buddhist thought are conceptualised and taught through the medium of English and in a Western university.
