HEFCE Funding Success
The Theatre Collection has been successful in securing HEFCE funding for university museums and
galleries.
HEFCE has distributed just over £10.5 million to university museums and galleries in England
for the academic year 2010-11.
The funding will support
33 individual museums and galleries in 19 universities and colleges.
The proposed
relative funding allocations will provide a basis for funding over the next 5 years subject to the outcome of the
next spending review and funding provided by the government.
Higher education institutions wishing to be considered for funding were invited to
make written submissions and the review panel considered how far the activities of the museums
and galleries meet core HEFCE policy aims and are activities of a kind that HEFCE funding
should support. Three main criteria were developed to support this consideration:
- provision of a service to the wider research community at significant cost beyond what is
needed to meet the needs of an institution's own researchers
- provision of a high-quality teaching and learning experience to the wider HE community
- addressing HEFCE's widening participation objective to promote and provide the opportunity of
successful higher education to everyone who can benefit from it
There are around a hundred university museums in the UK which are regularly accessible to the
public, with a further three hundred or so additional collections used mainly for academic
research and teaching.
University museums in England comprise 4% of the UK museum sector, yet they are custodians of 30%
of all the collections 'Designated' by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as being of national or international importance.
In Scotland, five university museums alone hold 13% of the country's similarly-rated collections.
